Synopsis:
In the Arab world, media and filmmaking, in particular is a profession fraught with difficulties. Filmmakers have to deal not only with the general lack of film industry infrastructure and culture, but also with the overreaching arm of government censorship. Even in a country like Egypt, where the film industry is relatively older and more developed, many filmmakers struggle to have their work screened in the mainstream media. The censors are forcing filmmakers to look for alternative methods and venues.
Ali Abu Shadi, Director of the Egyptian Censorship Authority, is the most powerful censor in the Arab world. He is accused by the Egyptian Young Filmmakers of restricting their freedom and creativity in making films that reflect their society’s issues and frustrations.
